Finding work with a long-term illness can come with many invisible barriers. However, with Astriid’s help, Victoria began to secure interviews with reputable organisations.
“It took me 20 years to get my first job. A lot of that was recovering, learning how to manage my illness well enough so that I could take care of myself. I tried every possible way you could think of to find work… Astriid made it possible.”
Victoria, who has ME/CFS, first became ill after contracting a virus. She became a full-time wheelchair user, and has spent the following years finding strategies for managing her illness and living independently. Victoria achieved a competitive degree in maths and computing, but despite this, it took her twenty years to find her first job. She pursued every possible route of finding work with a long-term illness, and fortunately discovered Astriid. She signed up as a candidate, and found through applying for roles through the platform, she was finally making it through to the interview stages of recruitment. Victoria secured a competitive role as a SharePoint Co-ordinator, and now works as a Business Process Manager for the charity.
She feels that the magic of Astriid is that the companies and businesses providing our inclusive opportunities have already said yes to the idea of employing people with long-term illnesses – it’s expected, rather than a surprise or something they’re unprepared for. Being in work reminds Victoria that she can contribute to society and be part of a network, and it has been a huge boost to her feelings of self-worth. With Astriid’s support, she now knows that she’s strong, hardworking and capable – all assets of a wonderful employee!
